Aether

I believe that work begets work.  Ideas accelerate-from the curiosity of the initial idea, to sketching, to the unexpected final creation that is art.  Evolving from one series to the next, I use paint, because paint has a magic quality; engaging line and color to create an interfacing entity that connects my inner self to the inner-self of humankind.  The idea of fractals being a metaphor for humanity itself, and those connections that are made within the human network are what I strive to capture in my work.   My influences have developed from expressionism to abstract expressionism to the images of science.  These images incorporate nature, the beauty of nature that science struggles to understand.

Whether the internal or the external, patterns in nature help us understand ourselves.  From the void to creation, patterns of  fractals create the underlying  platforms  of networks.  These networks are the underlying viscous matter that humanity relies on to exist.  Networks have a subliminal power that is slowly being understood, especially with the advent of "social" networks, which are changing the world in a dramatic way.  My work explores these developments in the context of abstraction.

Marks

Making marks is a primal act.  From the Ancients to the present day, humankind has been expressing itself through visual means.  I have this compulsion to make art.  The marks of the 21st century are being enlightened through science.  My work explores these developments in the context of abstraction.  My influences have developed from expressionism to abstract expressionism to images from science-fractals, chromosomes, karyotypes, etc.  These images incorporate nature, the nature that science struggles to understand.

The idea of fractals (self-similar images) being a metaphor for humanity itself, and those connections that are made within the human network are what I strive to capture in my work.

Statement 2008

My vision is a thread of will, of striving to live, that pulls one through life.  This is a single experience defined through many events.  While most of these events are unique to each life, the inner self or soul, is self-similar.  That is, to journey through the soul of one is to journey through the soul of all.  These works are an interface to the inner self as I experience it.  Dreaming, meditating, and sudden realizations are all vehicles to visualizing the inner self (soul/spirit).

To interact with the vision is to view the inner self as a snapshot within the continual transformation of the self, and that transformation in relation to its environment.  The instance of the experience is related through the process of the work using elements of a three-dimensional space, while time is suspended.

These works stand as entities within themselves.  They are not reflections of things, but rather are vehicles to transport the viewer to another space.  The act of inner reflection and exploration are vital to understanding our existence.  While these works are not reflections of society, politics, or other worldly ideas, the process of knowing the self is fundamental to comprehending how we understand ourselves, and our relationship to the world around us.

The human intellect overlays layers of order to cope with the uncertainties of life.  I explore these underlying layers with swirling, unstable, confused forms.  These forms compress, distill, and clarify my existence into one experience.  This experience, I believe, is encapsulated within the work, which is a fractal of humankind.

Statement: Enveloped

Enveloped explores relationships within the commonality of a living being.  My vision is a thread of will, of striving to live, that pulls one through life.  This is a single experience defined through many events.  While most of these events are unique to each life, the inner self or soul, is self-similar.  That is, to journey through the soul of one is to journey through the soul of all.

Entering the space of Enveloped provides an intimate environment that enables one to explore and contemplate life.  Immersion in the density of created elements allows ones field of vision to be on an intimate level with the work.  I wanted to experience “being in art” and use the thread that spirals through the piece as a means of navigating the space.

The octagon form recognizes the underlying compulsion to define chaos.  The human intellect overlays layers of order to cope with the uncertainties of life.  Enveloped explores these underlying layers with swirling, unstable, confused forms.  These forms compress, distill, and clarify my existence into one experience.  This experience, I believe, is encapsulated within the piece, which is a fractal of humankind.

Statement: Interface

These works are an interface between daily life and the inner self as I experience it.  Dreaming, meditating, and sudden realizations are all methods of visualizing the inner self.  The initial creation, then the destruction and the reconstruction of the paint, which is draped, wrapped, threaded, and glued on plexiglass, are analogous to the evolution of the self and how it is transformed to cope with the challenges of a constantly changing environment.  To interact with the vision is to view the inner self as a snapshot within the continual transformation of the self, and that transformation in relation to its environment.  The instance of the experience is related through the process of the work while time is suspended.

These works stand as entities within themselves.  They are vehicles to transport the viewer to another space, not to reflect or represent objects or ideas. The act of inner exploration is vital to understanding our existence.  While these works are not statements on society, politics, or other worldly subjects, the process of knowing the self is fundamental to comprehending how we understand ourselves, and our relationship to the world around us.
